Appeal for assistance in investigating 2010 Smolensk crash of Polish Air Force One

Dear Mr. President,

On April 10, 2010, a Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft of the Polish Air Force crashed near the city of Smolensk, Russia, killing all 96 people on board. The crash of a government plane near Smolensk was the greatest tragedy in Poland’s history since the Second World War. The Polish nation lost its President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria and members of the highest level delegation traveling to Katyn for the 70th anniversary of the extermination of Polish officers by NKVD during World War II. On April 10, 2018, the day of the long awaited unveiling of the memorial to Smolensk air crash victims, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, emphasized the fact that “the life of 96 victims of the air crash near Smolensk, including President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, was the best example and proof of unparalleled patriotism and service to others.”

On November 11, 1918, Poland after 123 years of occupation regained its independence due to support of American people and President Thomas Woodrow Wilson. President Ronald Reagan famously said, “Poland is not East or West. Poland is at the center of European civilization. It has contributed mightily to that civilization. It is doing so today by being magnificently unreconciled to oppression.” On July 6, 2017, Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States, in his speech to Poles in Krasinski Square in Warsaw, said at that time, “Poland is the geographic heart of Europe, but more importantly, in the Polish people, we see the soul of Europe. ... As I stand here today before this incredible crowd, this faithful nation, we can still hear those voices that echo through history. Their message is as true today as ever. The people of Poland, the people of America, and the people of Europe still cry out 'We want God'.” These words occupy a special place in the hearts of the Polish people.

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Poland regaining its Independence. The year 2018 as the jubilee year of Poland’s independence, is a unique and distinct time for the Polish people. Poles wish to celebrate their jubilee with dignity, pride and joy. Poles still remember that freedom and independence is within them. Poles have written the name of Poland in their hearts. Poland deserves to be proud of its independence. However, Poland needs American support that fully embodies its independence. In the jubilee year of Poland’s independence, the return of the Presidential Tu-154M plane wreckage from Russia would be the most precious gift for the Polish nation.

Dear Mr. President, please intervene and do your best in helping to recover the wreckage of a Polish presidential plane and its black boxes from Russia.

Since 1608 landing of first Poles in Jamestown, Virginia, Poles have been a force for good in the United States of America. General Thaddeus Kosciusko, Poland's and America's hero, the mastermind bihind victory of Battle of Saratoga, known as one of military history’s most famous struggles for independence and a turning point in the American Revolutionary War, the brillant engineer who fortified West Point and who fought for equality, freedom for slaves, minorities and American Indians, was a true Son of Liberty and a man ahead of his times. Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States of America, wrote of Kosciusko: “He is as pure a son of liberty as I have ever known.” General Casimir Pulaski, a father of American Cavalry, is another Polish and American hero. He died at Battle of Savannah fighting for Our Independence. Americans recognized his bravery by bestowing upon him title of Honorary Citizenship of the United States, as one of only eight people. Today, Poland is proud of its history, and also the famous people who have played a key role in fighting for Our Independence.

Eight years ago, on April 10, 2010, the Polish nation suffered from the greatest tragedy in Poland’s history since the Second World War. Three days later, On April 13, 2010, Poles came to pay their respects at the Presidential palace in Warsaw. Yes, I remember that day as if it happened yesterday. Together with my compatriots in Warsaw, I felt about being a part of that historic event.

On July 6, 2017, a huge number of Poles arrived in Warsaw to listen to the first speech of Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States, in Europe. Your words to Poles in Krasinski Square in Warsaw, Mr. President, moved us all. I firmly believe that You are chosen by God to mark praiseworthily Your place in American and Polish history. As a Pole living in Poland, I would like to express my appreciation, Mr. President, for that generous act of Your friendship towards Poland and Poles.

I would really appreciate Your response to a request from Poland.

Respectfully,

dr. eng. Tomasz Niemas
